Destin calls itself the World's Luckiest Fishing Village, and the harbor is the reason. Charter boats, dolphin cruises and parasail outfits line the water along HarborWalk Village, just off Highway 98.

Crab Island is the big one. It's a sandbar in the bay beside the Destin bridge that you can only reach by boat, and on a summer afternoon it's packed with pontoons, floating food stands and people standing waist-deep in clear water. Go near high tide for the clearest water.

For a beach day without a boat, Henderson Beach State Park has boardwalks over the dunes, a campground and a quieter stretch of sand than the busy accesses in the middle of town.

Highway 98 backs up in the summer, especially on weekends. Plan dinner close to where you're staying and save the longer drives for the morning.
